Do you need a renewal?

Renewal needed

You need a renewal one year after your first screening if:

  • You were born in, or have lived 6 months or more in, a very high risk tuberculosis country, whatever your job.
  • You work as a doctor, dentist, nurse, midwife or other health professional.
  • You work as a carer, nanny or child carer.
  • You are a food handler, beauty or massage therapist, or tattooist.

Usually no renewal

If you are not from a very high risk tuberculosis country, and you work in a job such as administration, construction, cleaning, security, transport or delivery, you do not normally need a renewal screening.

If you are unsure, ask your employer or check the official HPDP guidance below.

Changing employer

If you change employer but stay in the same job category, you do not need a new health screening application. A renewal may still be due on its usual date.

If a new screening is needed after a job change, a chest X-ray taken within the last year can be reused.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to renew my work permit health screening?+

You need a renewal if you were born in, or have lived for 6 months or more in, a very high risk tuberculosis country, or if you work in healthcare, childcare, food handling, beauty or massage therapy, or tattooing. Other workers, for example in administration, construction or cleaning, do not normally need one.

When is my health screening renewal due?+

A renewal is due one year after your first health screening, so workers who need it are screened during their first two years of work in Malta.

I changed employer. Do I need a new health screening?+

Not if you stay in the same job category: a new health screening application is not needed, although a renewal may still be due on its usual date. If a new screening is needed, a chest X-ray taken within the last year can be reused.

Can I reuse my chest X-ray from last time for my renewal?+

Usually not. For a renewal, the chest X-ray must be taken within 6 weeks of the renewal application date. The one-year rule only applies when changing jobs.

What ID should I bring to my renewal X-ray?+

Please bring your Maltese ID card (residence card). If you do not have it with you, bring your passport.

Does LifeScan send my X-ray to Identità or HPDP?+

No. LifeScan never submits health screenings. We email your X-ray report to you, and can also send a copy to your doctor, who uploads it when completing your renewal online.

How soon can I get a renewal X-ray appointment?+

Always book online: we do not take walk-ins. Same-day appointments are usually available, except on Sundays and public holidays.
